Dr. Matthew Schaffer, Class of 2010, graduated from Bethany Lutheran College with a major in Chemistry. He went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker, Colorado. In 2017, he began his medical career with Mobridge Regional Hospital & Clinics (MRH&C) in Mobridge, South Dakota.
Dr. Schaffer completed his residency in Family Medicine and Obstetrics at Rapid City Regional Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. His professional interests include pediatrics, obstetrics, and sports medicine—areas that allow him to serve a broad range of patient needs in his rural community.
Reflecting on his time at Bethany, Dr. Schaffer credits the college’s academic and spiritual environment for preparing him well for the rigors of medical school and a life of service. Courses in chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, and communication gave him a competitive edge, while internships at Mayo Clinic and volunteer experiences helped deepen his passion for healthcare. He also recalls the mentorship and Christian foundation at Bethany as instrumental in shaping both his personal and professional outlook.
Dr. Matthew Schaffer’s journey—from Chemistry major to physician, husband, father, and community leader—reflects how a Christ-centered education at Bethany Lutheran College cultivates not only academic excellence but also a lifelong commitment to service and faith-informed vocation.
