Kalie VanMeveren, Class of 2012, graduated from Bethany Lutheran College with a degree in Psychology, then completed her graduate training in school psychology. She now serves as a school psychologist at an elementary school north of the Twin Cities, supporting approximately 350 students from early childhood through fifth grade.
In her role, Kalie collaborates closely with teachers, staff, and administrators to enhance academic success and foster positive learning environments. She facilitates problem-solving meetings when students exhibit academic or behavioral concerns, helps design and monitor special education interventions, and administers evaluations when needed to determine eligibility for support services.
Kalie was drawn to school psychology as a vocational calling that merges her passion for psychology with her interest in education: “I love my job because I get to work with students and teachers to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in the classroom and in daily life.”
She aspires to transform how students experience learning, particularly those who struggle: “There is nothing more rewarding than having a student see their progress and start to enjoy school again.”
Reflecting on her time at Bethany, Kalie notes how involvement and mentorship shaped her trajectory. From roles in student journalism and leadership to serving as a teaching assistant for a child development professor, she describes a learning environment grounded in relationship and discovery. “Attending Bethany was one of the best decisions I ever made.”
Her advice to current students is practical and intentional: explore diverse career opportunities, pay attention to your interests, and seek experience through research, shadowing, or reading—it all contributes to future clarity and purpose.
Kalie’s journey—psychology major to practicing school psychologist—illustrates how Bethany Lutheran College equips graduates with a blend of academic insight, Christ-rooted character, and professional readiness. Her work in cognitive and academic support reflects strong alignment with Bethany’s mission to form individuals who serve with empathy, intellect, and faith.
