Teaching Philosophy

I believe my job is to guide the student to be curious about their subject – to want to learn and discover more. If there is something that is not my field, I will come and join the student in study. It is more important to me that a student learn to love learning, than it is they master a specific subject. If you love to learn – the world opens up before you.

Biography

Ann Fredrickson has been a music professor for nearly 30 years at Bethany Lutheran College. Her areas of focus include music history, choral music, and private voice. She has been the artistic director for the college musical for over 25 years.

Currently, she also moonlights as Executive Director for ProMusica Minnesota, a non-profit chamber music concert series.

Previous to teaching, Ann pursued a career in opera, performing for over 10 years with the Minnesota Opera, Opera101, North Star Opera, and Pocket Opera. Her time with Minnesota Opera included main stage roles and National and Regional tours. She was the recipient of the Eleanor Koehler Ellerbe Award from the Schubert Club, First Runner-up in the District Metropolitan Opera Competition, Winner of the Young Artist Award for the Minnesota Federation of Music Clubs, and winner of the Henry Holt and NATS competitions in California. Her oratorio credits include Messiah at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, and Ein Deutsches Requiem, Coronation Mass, Vesperae Solennes, and Madrigals by George Crumb.

Ann graduated with a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a B. A. from St. Olaf College. She has served as a volunteer on the boards of ProMusica Minnesota, Mankato Symphony Orchestra, the leadership team of Excelsior Covenant Church, and as a Youth Coach for Encircled, a non-profit that develops potential in young people.
