Omar McMillan ’96

Fourth-Grade Teacher | Basketball Coach | 2020 Minnesota Teacher of the Year Finalist
Omar McMillan’s passion for teaching and mentorship has shaped countless lives in the Richfield, Minnesota community. A finalist for the 2020 Minnesota Teacher of the Year award, Omar serves as a fourth-grade teacher at Richfield STEM School and is also the head varsity boys’ basketball coach for the Richfield Spartans. His work, both in the classroom and on the court, reflects a deep commitment to the growth and development of young people.

Before launching his career in education, Omar was a standout scholarship athlete at Bethany Lutheran College, playing basketball during the 1994–95 and 1995–96 seasons. Under the guidance of Coach Art Westphal, he earned All-State and All-Conference honors, and was known as much for his leadership and character as his performance on the court. Coach Westphal recalls, “Even at nineteen, it was obvious he had the personality to be a teacher someday.”

Omar points to his time at Bethany—and a formative conversation with Coach Westphal—as key moments in his decision to pursue teaching. “Coach told me I had a special gift for working with kids,” Omar says. “He’s always been one of the most respectable male figures in my life.”

Today, Omar finds joy in the long-term impact of his work. “We’re not just educators—we’re mentors, role models, and sometimes big brothers or sisters,” he shares. “One of the greatest rewards is when students come back to tell you how much you meant to them.”

Reflecting on his journey, Omar says, “Being a student at Bethany helped shape and mold the person I am today. It’s an honor to be recognized for something you’re passionate about. God has blessed me with a gift.”

Bethany Lutheran College is proud to recognize Omar McMillan ’96 for the difference he continues to make in the lives of students every day.
