Madison Barber (’19)

Madison Barber graduated from Bethany Lutheran College in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies. During her time on campus, she actively pursued opportunities to grow—most notably through Bethany’s mock trial program, where she developed courtroom confidence and sharpened her public-speaking skills by competing alongside motivated peers.

“I was drawn to the legal studies field because of how intricate of a practice it is,” Madison shares. “You are always in the middle of something—whether it’s talking to clients, interviewing witnesses, or arguing in court. This is a field where I will never be bored.”

Today, Madison is pursuing her Juris Doctor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, with a focus on criminal defense and family law. “I believe I’ll be able to make a difference,” she explains. “In a lot of these cases, you are someone’s lifeline in the legal world—and that is very important.”

Madison credits her Bethany education for laying a strong academic and personal foundation for law school. “Going to Bethany prepared me immensely for the career path I am on,” she says. “The one-on-one interaction you get with professors and support staff is incredible.” She especially acknowledges the support of Professors Sara Edwards, Dan Birkholz, and Ryan MacPherson for their guidance and influence throughout her undergraduate years.

“What I remember most about Bethany was the support you had from everyone. Professors, support staff, students, and coaches all knew who you were and wanted you to succeed. Not a lot of colleges can offer that.”

Her advice to current students: “Utilize the resources Bethany has to offer! A lot of peers I know are astounded by the attention I received in my education, personal life, and faith while I was at Bethany.”

Madison’s story is a testament to how a Christ-centered, liberal arts education in legal studies can equip students for professional training and service-minded careers. Her journey reflects the clarity, conviction, and compassion that Bethany strives to instill in every graduate.
